360AM: Questions For Golf Channel's Tilghman

Kelly Tilghman's Tardy Apology, UFC On The Prowl For Broadcaster, Weinsteins Sign With Writers, Tony's Wedding  Without Tina and other news.

Cable360AM — News briefing for Friday, Jan. 11 »

Select members of the Cable 360 news staff swear that the next time they have dinner with Alex Ovechkin, he’s paying. Good morning.

Richard Sandomir of The NY Times wonders why the nation’s first female announcer of a major sport, The Golf Channel’s Kelly Tilghman, didn’t apologize immediately on camera when she said during a telecast last Friday that one way to stop Tiger Woods’ dominance would be to “lynch him in a back alley.” Sandomir also asked Golf Channel President Page Thompson about it. He didn’t know either. Tilghman has been suspended for 2 weeks. [The NY Times

Although he’s said repeatedly that a deal is brewing with HBO, Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White is quoted today regarding a pact with “a big television network.” Currently UFC brawls are carried on Spike TV. [Fox Sports.com]

Things are so bad with the Writers Strike that few media outlets had stories about it, save that the Weinstein Co. signed an interim pact with the WGA. The deal is similar to one inked by David Letterman’s production company and Tom Cruise’s United Artists. Meanwhile, WGA West cancelled its awards banquet, apparently without the knowledge of WGA East. [LA Times] [Hollywood Reporter]

The Mecca of illegal movies and music, Pirate Bay of Sweden, may be charged at month’s end, The Wall Street Journal says. [The Wall Street Journal]

There’s an education and a mortgage crisis, parts of Louisiana still resemble a cesspool, there are wars throughout the world and Congress decides its top priority includes a visit from Roger Clemens. C-SPAN will carry that hearing Tuesday. [Houston Chronicle]

James Gandolfini, 46, reportedly is set to tie the knot with girlfriend Deborah Lin. It would be The Sopranos star’s second marriage. [NY Post]
