6. Crowding MySpaceChris DeWolfeTitle: CEO, MySpace Age: 40 Tom Anderson Title: President. MySpace Age: 30 Shawn Gold Title: CMO-mktg and content at MySpace Age: 41 Why Them? We know what you’re thinking. First we put those Google-YouTube bozos in the CableFAX 100 (and pretty high up at that), and now this!?! Tough. Chris DeWolfe, Tom Anderson and Shawn Gold have managed to build and market something incredible at MySpace: A youth-oriented community that seems to grow bigger every day. When Rupert Murdoch stole this company for $580 million in 2005, MySpace became even more powerful. It now hosts more than 130 million profiles. What does this have to do with cable? Well, anyone who has checked MySpace lately knows that there is plenty of video up there (much of it linked to YouTube) and lots of music (the same kind of content cable’s trying to promote online). MySpace has done it better. In addition, Gold has been savvy about partnering with movie and TV producers to promote their shows through the site with “sponsored profiles” and other gimmicks to create awareness (Gold even spoke at the last CTAM Summit). In November, MySpace and TBS partnered to create a comedy competition online. Until the next big thing takes over (Facebook, perhaps?), MySpace is a top youth destination with the right media connections. Call it Rupert’s revenge. - MG Click here to return to the 2006 CFAX 100 List |
