100. Rest In PeaceSteve Irwin Title: The Crocodile Hunter, Animal Planet Born: Feb. 22, 1962 Died: Sept. 4, 2006 Why Him? We felt it only proper to devote the #100 spot to perhaps one of the most colorful cable personalities of all time. Animal Planet's Steve Irwin died doing what he loved: Working with animals. And as he warned viewers so many times over the years, it can be dangerous work. In the end, Irwin will be remembered as a tireless, passionate conservationist who never compromised with anyone. And yet somehow it seems fitting he would die trying to share with us the wonders of the animal kingdom. Some would say Irwin’s penchant for danger was akin to a death wish. We don’t think so. Irwin believed that people needed to see animals up close to understand them. And he was willing to risk his life to show us that all animals—not just the cute, furry ones—deserve our love and respect. We’ll all miss Steve Irwin. The world is a lesser place without him. - MG Click here to return to the 2006 CFAX 100 List. |
