13. SmitacularNeil Smit Title: President & CEO, Charter Communications Age: 47 Years in Industry: 1 Years left in the industry: “Lots” Why him? Neil Smit inherited quite a mess when he took over Charter in Aug 2005: Suffocating debt, multibillion losses, subscriber defections and a testy dispute with chairman Paul Allen all greeted him on his first day at work. People doubted this former AOLer could right the ship. They were wrong. In no time, Smit has led Charter to profitability, paid down debt, slowed churn and, of course, made peace with Allen. He’s also posting good VoIP numbers, with 67,000 phone adds in Q2 alone. Charter's influence in the industry continues to grow, and the company has surpassed Cox as the third largest MSO. Long story short: The constant parade of bad news out of Charter in recent years appears over. Smit deserves credit. We may have reserved judgment last year, but we’re believers now. - MG I knew the cable industry was for me when: “I realized the value of the bundle.” Favorite restaurant: “Joan's Log Cabin in Lake Minnetonka, MN.” Three things I would take with me to a deserted island: “My wife, my kids, my best friends.” Favorite TV show (If you’re a programmer, please pick one NOT from your network): “House” Favorite movie: “Being There” Favorite sports team: St Louis Cardinals The world would be a better place if: “Charter had no debt.” Click here to return to the 2006 CFAX 100 List |
