41. Wall Street WarriorsJohn AlchinTitle: Executive Vice President and Co-Chief Financial Officer, Comcast Larry Smith Title: EVP and Co-CFO, Comcast Marlene Dooner Title: VP of investor relations, Comcast Why Them? Comcast chief Brian Roberts has expressed frustration for years about Wall Street’s organized campaign to diss cable. But the dissing, well… dissipated in recent months as investors began to fall in love with the triple play. At Comcast, the investor education game falls to Alchin and Smith, as well as Dooner, who tag team the Street to explain why spending billions on upgrades makes long-term sense (despite the Street’s short-term mindset). Both will retire in '07, leaving Providence Equity Partners' Michael Angelakis to fill their large shoes in '08. Comcast has officially reported 3 blow-out quarters in a row. Analysts are raising targets. All told, this group deserves recognition. And probably a vacation. - MG John Alchin I knew the cable industry was for me when: “I met Julian Brodsky.” Defining career moment: “When Brian, Julian and Ralph hired me – 17 years ago!” Person I most admire in the cable industry and why: “Ralph Roberts, because he created Comcast.” Biggest cable surprise of 2006: “The market finally woke up and got the cable story.” My most embarrassing cable moment was: “When I turned down Julian’s request for a bank loan while I will still a banker.” Favorite restaurant: August Favorite cities: Philadelphia and Sydney Favorite piece of tech: DVR Larry Smith Defining career moment: “Completion of AT&T deal.” Person I most admire in the cable industry and why: “John Malone—he hates to pay taxes.” Biggest cable surprise of 2006: “Finally, Wall Street got it.” Top personal achievement in 2006: “Completing the Time Warner/Adelphia Transaction.” Favorite city: London Favorite line from a movie or TV show: “Show me the money.” – “Jerry McGuire” Click here to return to the 2006 CFAX 100 List. |
