44. A Decade of FoxRoger AilesTitle: Chairman, Fox News Channel Age: 66 Why Him? Whether you’re a card-carrying fan of Fox News Channel or simply can’t stomach “The O’Reilly Factor,” it’s tough to argue against the influence Roger Ailes has had on cable news. Since launching the network 10 years ago, Ailes has turned coverage on its ear, created celebrities of anchors and brought industry-wide color—Wizard Of Oz-style—to once-somnambulant news delivery. We’re definitely not in Kansas any more. And although FSN draws fire from some who question its objectivity, the network toppled CNN from the cable news throne and has left MSNBC in the dust. It draws roughly 840,00 viewers a day. Yet as cable penetration plateaus and the Internet beckons, Ailes finds little time to rest. When FSN’s ratings slid this year, he immediately tinkered with the lineup and oversaw a Web site redesign, adding content from YouTube, among other changes. And word has it the long-awaited spinoff business channel will finally launch in ‘07. Ailes' energy and drive is what makes him a success. - CAO Click here to return to the 2006 CFAX 100 List. |
