49. Standing OvationLauren ZalaznickTitle: President, Bravo Age: 42 Years in Industry: 12 Years left in the industry: “Ask my boss.” Why Her? It’s as if “Project Runway’s” Heidi Klum had uttered her infamous mandate, “Make it work,” to Zalaznick when she took over 2 1/2 years ago. While Bravo had been embedded in the artsy-fartsy crowd, under Zalaznick it has blossomed into a true watercooler staple, culminating with a double-digit ratings spike and its most-watched quarter ever in Q3. She gets that shows such as the lofty “Inside The Actors Studio” can play alongside new series like “The Real Housewives Of Orange County” and “Kathy Griffin: My Life On The D-List,” so her network can embrace new viewers without sending older-school fans running for the remote. As a result, Bravo has lowered the median age of its viewers to just over 42—a boost for the linear network and its Web site. We have just one thing to say, Lauren... Bravo. - CAO I knew the cable industry was for me when: “The first person in TV I knew offered me a job and told me that if I stopped freelancing and took the job, I could get paid even when I went on vacation.” Biggest cable surprise of 2006: “That we will have gone from a 56-year-old system of Nielsen ratings to a DVR-impacted one to a commercial ratings system within one year's time.” Person (other than my current boss) who I’d most like to work for: Walter Mossberg, the Wall Street Journal’s tech guru. Favorite line from a movie or TV show: “Oh, that poor man.” - Francis Ford Coppola, “The Conversation” I wish cable would: “Resist the anticipated commercial ratings system--why would we agree to invert a business model by guaranteeing the ratings for only programming on our air we do not control?” Favorite piece of tech: “It's pretty old school, but the NY City Subway System.” Click here to return to the 2006 CFAX 100 List. |
