Why Them? Even in the hyper-inflated world of the NFL, observers noticed the nearly $9 billion ESPN forked over for rights to Monday Night Football, the iconic sports property whose move from broadcast earned cable major props. Content czar John Skipper took the Night out of MNF, inundating all his ESPN platforms with MNF reportage, beginning Mondays at 6am ET, with ESPN Radio’s “Mike & Mike in the Morning” broadcasting live from the game site. The results were record ratings. Southern gentleman Skipper turned to former Pepsi exec Katie Lacey, who cooked up the Monday Night marketing pitch without ever resorting to Coke, and Emmy winning Sunday Night Football producer Jay Rothman, who became a man of the cloth after brokering a deal for MNF talent to wear Canali suits and Max Mara apparel. - SA
