65. The Eastern Front

Michael Doyle
Title:  President, Comcast Cable Eastern Division & founder, CN8
Age: 52
Years in Industry: 30
Years left in the industry: “As many as I’m still welcome.”

Why Him? Michael Doyle continues to re-up his heavy hitter status. Not only is he revered for founding CN8 and proving cable could provide high-quality regional content (watch out, broadcasters), but he now faces an even bigger challenge: Massive competition from Verizon up and down the Eastern seaboard. Verizon is determined to spend `till it hurts to steal Comcast’s subs in all of those lucrative metropolitan markets. But we’re betting on Doyle to put up a formidable cable defense. When and if cable prevails, we’re sure it will receive ample coverage on CN8. - MG

Top personal achievement in 2006: “Learning that I was about to become a grandfather to twin boys.”
Person (other than my current boss) who I’d most like to work for: George Steinbrenner
In my free time, I like to: “Run long distances, listen to music, compete in paddle tennis.”
My most embarrassing cable moment was: “Standing up to make a speech in front of 3,000 people at Rutgers University and realizing that my fly was unzipped. I snuck behind the podium, zipped it, then looked down and realized I had a ‘malfunctioning wardrobe’ long before it was fashionable. I finally acknowledged it to the 3,000 attendees and continued with my speech. I have lots of embarrassing cable moments. Another was reviewing the Cable Guide we used to publish only to discover they had placed my photo on the wrong page—which would have been just fine, only they placed it on a ‘Together Dating’ advertisement!”
Favorite line from a movie or TV show: “Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth.”—“Pride of the Yankees,” with Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig starting his farewell speech at Yankee Stadium.
Three things I would take with me to a deserted island: “My MP3 player, Nathan’s Coney Island hot dogs, photos of my wife and daughters.”
Favorite song: “Give Me Shelter” – The Rolling Stones
