83. The DealmakersRick Michaels Title: Chairman/CEO, Communications Equity Associates Age: 62 Years in Industry: 30 Years left in the industry: Last man standing? Brian Deevy Title: Chairman/CEO, Daniels & Associates Age: 51 John W. Waller, III Title: Chairman, Waller Capital Age: 55 Years in Industry: 28 Why Them? The rising share prices aren't the only way to gauge how hot cable is right now. Look at all the private equity players with a communications focus trying to figure out ways to get into the cable business. (With RBC Capital's planned purchase of Daniels slated to close in Q1, Deevy will become CEO of the new RBC Capital). The tough job for these three heavyweights is trying to find some properties out there with some size and scale to get deals done. - AM Rick Michaels I knew the cable industry was for me when: “I was in Graduate School at the Annenberg School of Communications, University of Pennsylvania, and read Ralph Lee Smith’s book, ‘The Wired Nation’ in 1967, which foretold not only the national development of cable, but also ironically enough, the Internet.” Person I most admire in the cable industry and why: “John Malone who, in spite of being the industry’s biggest success story, is still working and still doing deals and he’s older than I am.” My most embarrassing cable moment was: “When I told my mother in 1968 that I was getting into the cable business, I had to explain to her what it was and why she wasn’t going to have to subsidize my apartment in Los Angeles.” Three things I would take with me to a deserted island: “(1) Portable desalination plan; (2) Satellite telephone; (3) Captain of the Cowboy’s Cheerleading Squad.” I wish cable would: “Recognize the immediacy of the need to diversify due to the changing paradigm in media brought about by rapid expansion of broadband and the impact on viewers’/users’ ability to access video information services and other forms of entertainment on demand through the Web. This is particularly true of participatory activities ranging from games to MySpace and YouTube.” If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? “You need to turn around and go back to where you came from, son. You are a decade too early.” Brian Deevy I knew the cable industry was for me when: “I went to Western Show in '81 and Bill Daniels had the Presidential Suite at the top of the Disneyland Hotel.” Defining career moment: “I hope I haven’t had it yet.” Person I most admire in the cable industry and why: “Bill Daniels, obviously.” Biggest cable surprise of 2006: “How long it took the Street to acknowledge cable's performance.” In my free time, I like to: “Coach my kids' sports.” Favorite city: New Orleans Favorite sports team: Chicago Cubs Favorite piece of tech: BlackBerry John Waller Top personal achievement in 2006: “Cycled 180 miles in the mountains of Virginia in 3 days.” In my free time, I like to: “Hang out with my 3 young children.” Favorite city: New York City Favorite restaurant: JG Melon Favorite movie: “The Illusionist” Click here to return to the 2006 CFAX 100 List. |
