Spotlight on the CableFAX 100—TLC's Amy Winter

Amy Winter with Buddy Valastro, A.K.A. "Cake Boss"

Amy Winter

Title: EVP/GM, TLC

Years in Cable: 17

Education: BA, University of Notre Dame

Best Advice: Think more about goals, less about risk.

Why Her? Winter’s role expanded significantly in February. She now oversees all programming aspects, products, development, new media and marketing. She commandeered the network’s launch of “Spouse vs. House,” “New York Ink” and “Say Yes To the Dress: Bridesmaids,” the spinoff showcasing the bridal party one snap from becoming a band of co-bridezillas.

Unscripted Success: Winter’s spot-on recipe for unscripted series catapulted TLC to No. 9 among cable networks, thanks in part to top-rated “Cake Boss” “My Strange Addiction” and signature hurts-so-good “Toddlers & Tiaras.”

Favorite meal I can also prepare myself: turkey tacos

One topping that should never be on a hot dog: I’m anti-relish.

Personal theme song: “Everyday People”

Favorite “going out” town: Nashville

One thing I tell my kids about success in life: Success comes in many forms.

Starbucks order: Skinny Vanilla Latte (but I’m a sucker for the Eggnog Latte)

Bands I would actually see live: Stereophonics, Black Keys, Weepies

Top 3 selections on my iPod: “Music is the Victim,” Scissor Sisters; “I’m Going Down” (cover), Frank Black; “Waiting on a Friend,” Rolling Stones

Sports team: Notre Dame, Bears, Cubs

Vacation spot: Anyplace a Blackberry doesn’t work

When I look at my cable set-top box, I can’t help but think: There is a lot of data to be mined in there.

When it comes to retransmission consent, cable operators should: Simplify the process.

If I invented my own app it would: Do laundry and clean my kitchen counters.

The one burning question for my iPhone 4S Siri: Will you do my taxes? ◆
