New From CableLabs: Quals Program For DOCSIS EPONs

Following on the heels of its fourth DOCSIS Provisioning of EPON (DPoE ) interoperability event last month, attended by 19 industry suppliers, CableLabs unveiled an equipment qualification program for its DPoE project, aiming to “facilitate accelerated development of devices that support the delivery of business communications services using Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON).”

The CableLabs DPoE program is an extension of earlier DOCSIS certification programs.

“The DPoE Qualification Program allows equipment makers to certify their technology and devices are compliant with CableLabs DPoE version 1.0 specifications, which describe a common approach for using DOCSIS back-office provisioning processes to deliver business data services over EPON access networks.” CableLabs says. “The DPoE specifications were published in February 2011. Assuring compliance with the specifications in turn allows cable companies to invest confidently in equipment that is known to be interoperable with other DPoE-compliant devices.”

Adds Mike LaJoie, executive vice president and CTO at Time Warner Cable,  “We continue to see greater demand for our IP and Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF)-based business services, and are excited to deploy qualified DPoE devices in our network, facilitating a common approach for provisioning and greater cost efficiencies.”

CableLabs’ interoperability events allow suppliers to test their latest products within CableLabs’ headends and testing environment, determine compliance with industry specifications and the ability of their products to interoperate with other devices in an end-to-end system.
