New Orleans iDEN Towers First To Shut Down

In October 2011, Sprint revealed the details of its plans to decommission at least 25,000 “excess capacity” Nextel iDEN sites as part of its Network Vision initiative.

A new map on the Nextel channel of its Web site (click here for more information) now allows Nextel subscribers to enter a zip code to determine if and when the iDEN towers in their areas may go out of service.

The maps will provide a 30-day heads-up as to which towers will be deactivated in any given service area.

The first towers to be turned off later this month are in New Orleans, after the city’s annual Mardi Gras celebration ends.
