The Intelligent Spectrum Harvest

Following on the cutover of it first TV White Space (TVWS) network in North Carolina yesterday (click here for more information), Spectrum Bridge now says it’s collaborating with InterDigital Inc. to develop Dynamic Spectrum Management technologies that “intelligently harvest” TVWS and other under-utilized frequency bands.

According to Spectrum Bridge, spectrum harvesting opens new blocks of radio waves for use by Wi-Fi, Long Term Evolution (LTE) and other wireless systems. Complemented by the TVWS database service and advanced spectrum-sharing capabilities from Spectrum Bridge, InterDigital will offer a Dynamic Spectrum Management solution that includes:

>> Allocation and aggregation of contiguous and non-contiguous frequency channels across licensed, unlicensed and TV white space;
>> Database and sensing-assisted spectrum allocation; and
>> Extension of such legacy systems as Wi-Fi and cellular into under-utilized frequency bands.

“It is clear the pace of wireless innovation will put further pressure on the growing demand for spectrum,” notes Rod Dir, president/CEO at Spectrum Bridge. “Working with InterDigital highlights the value of integrating this spectrum-sharing technology with a wireless application to dynamically match bandwidth needs with the best available spectrum assets.”

Adds James J. Nolan, executive vice president/R&D at InterDigital, “Spectrum Bridge’s spectrum-sharing technologies support InterDigital’s vision of tomorrow’s ‘network of networks,’ characterized by the seamless integration of multiple communications networks that constantly connect people and things. Intelligent and dynamic harvesting of prime spectrum, under-utilized by the primary licensee, is a practical approach for solving the bandwidth crunch.”
