Comcast Launches Wireless

Comcast launched broadband wireless service in Portland today. Dubbed Comcast High-Speed 2go, the service will be rolled out nationwide.

The service will use both fourth-generation (4G) and third-generation (3G) wireless infrastructure. Comcast’s 4G service will be provided via the Clearwire network; 3G, via Sprint’s nationwide 3G network. Comcast will brand the data-only service using two different wireless data laptop cards: Metro, and Nationwide.

Comcast is one of several cable operators that invested in the Clearwire joint venture in November 2008. Among the other cities slated for service in 2009 are Atlanta, Chicago and Philadelphia.

Comcast plans to sell the services as a residential bundled data packages: The Fast Pack Metro for $49.99 and Fast Pack Nationwide for an additional $20.00. Comcast also plans to sell the wireless service to small-to-mid-sized businesses (SMBs).
