Comings & Goings

Matthew Jarecki

Matthew Jarecki has been upped to VP, Advertising Sales for Oxygen Media. His responsibilities include increasing national ad sales revenue for the Northeast, particularly through integrated marketing and multiplatform ad sales partnerships. Before joining Oxygen in April 2012, Jarecki worked at Turner for 12 years as an account executive and sales planner. He also worked at Scripps for 6 years on the ad sales side, for brands including Food Network and Fine Living. Matt loves to watch sports—he’s a huge New York Giants and Mets fan—and likes going to concerts as well. Particularly the Counting Crows. He also enjoys cooking omelets for his family and watching “The Office.”

Sofia Chang, Henry McGee

After a 34-year stint at HBO, Henry McGee is retiring as president of HBO Home Entertainment. He’s leaving to be a fulltime faculty member at Harvard Business School this fall, where he’ll teach courses in leadership and business ethics. Meanwhile, effective March 4, Sofia Chang will be EVP and GM, HBO Home Entertainment. McGee began at HBO in 1979, took over the video division in 1995 and steered the company through Blu-ray HD, digital download and global expansion. He worked as a reporter for Newsweek magazine prior to embarking on his long career at the network. McGee's accolades are numerous. To name a few: Hall of Fame of the National Association of Minorities in Communications, named one of New York's top 100 minority executives by Crain's New York Business, and a fellow of England's RSA (Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers & Commerce).

Sofia Chang has held the position of SVP, Program Strategy & Planning since March 2012. In this capacity she has overseen program strategy, audience research and promotion planning and scheduling for HBO and Cinemax. Chang has also held positions at HBO including SVP, Marketing and Creative Services and SVP, Consumer Marketing, Retail Products. During her pre-HBO days she was a brand advertising manager for Pacific Bell. Sofia was born in Brazil and emigrated to the US in the late ‘70s. She learned English by watching a lot of Brady Bunch re-runs.

Lori West, Karyn Adelstein, Michael Kanner, Paul Adler, Leslie Furuta

TV Guide network has announced a slew of executive promotions and appointments. Lori West has joined the company as SVP, Direct Response, Ad Sales. She’ll head up direct response and paid programming sales in her new role. Previously, she served as VP, Ad Sales, Direct Response and Paid Programming for GMC. She also worked in similar roles at Oxygen Media and Discovery Communications. Lori tells us she loves to travel and plans to see the entire planet before she leaves it. Cooking—learning and trying to cook, that is—is another love of hers.

Also in ad sales, Karyn Adelstein was promoted to SVP, Marketing, Ad Sales from the VP role. Karyn has served as a mentor for Advertising Women of New York and a judge for the International PROMAX Awards. This involvement has been invaluable for her, as she strongly believes in nurturing young executives to build and expand their own professional networks.

Michael Kanner was upped to SVP, Planning, Strategy and Operations, Ad Sales from the VP role. His newest set of responsibilities includes ad sales research and traffic. Fun fact about Michael: He played in the National Chess Championships 4 times as a child. Also, he can be found watching the Wisconsin games on Saturdays. In fact, originally he wanted to be a sportscaster, but he fell into this business.

In programming, Paul Adler was elevated to SVP, Original Programming from the VP role. We learned that Paul was quite a precocious 17-year-old. He got his start in the business by writing to the General Manager of the CBS affiliate in his hometown of Boston. His suggestion? The station lacked programming for teenagers. He was summoned to the station for a meeting and audition, and ultimately was handed the task of producing and hosting a series of specials about adolescent issues. Thus, he became the youngest producer of television in the country.

In the communications and media relations division, Leslie Furuta was upped to SVP, Communications and Media Relations. Corporate communications and the net’s digital properties fall under her purview. Leslie loves yoga, hiking and USC football. And she’s a mom to her 2 and ½-year-old daughter Skylar.

Joe Capobianco

YES Network promoted Joe Capobianco to Director, National Sales. He’ll work with Home Team Sports, the network’s national sales rep, and keep up relationships with major national clients. Prior to joining YES, Capobianco was an account exec at WPIX-TV in New York and a sales manager at MMT Sales in New York, a division of Cox Enterprises. He also served as account executive for FOX Television Sales. Joe’s life is consumed by his “3-year-old twin demon children,” he tells us. Hobbies include boxing, to “alleviate stress caused by 3-year-old demon children.” He works on 3 hours of sleep per night, thanks to said demons, and has no social life to speak of. Why? You guessed it. 3-year-old demon children.
