HD Tidbits
The Mar 19 launch of DirecTV’s new satellite was deemed a success, and will allow the satcaster to rocket skyward its HD channel capacity. Once the satellite goes live this fall, DirecTV says up to 150 national high-def nets and local HD programming in more than 100 markets will be available. Watch the launch at Sea-Launch.com. — Smithsonian Nets inked an intl distribution deal with Off the Fence, which will represent the net's HD programming lineup in all global territories save for the US. The pact covers 50 titles. — DISH now offers local broadcast nets in HD in Austin; Flint, MI; Orlando; and West Palm Beach. Also, DISH launched NEDN HD. — Comcast is slated to launch 22 HD channels, including Disney Channel HD and WGN HD, by Apr 30 to the vast majority of the former Insight IL footprint, including Rockford. — All 6 "Stars Wars" films are coming to Spike in HD splendor. The net's stunt will feature the 1st 3 installments Apr 4-6, the latter 3 Apr 11-13, and includes the broadcast premieres of Ep III and the basic cable premieres of Eps I & II.
